HISTORY OF PULAU TANJUNG SURAT
Pulau Tanjung Surat is a small island located at the river mouth of Sungai Johor. The island is a home to about 300 people of 112 families from three different villages: Kg. Linting, Kg. Tanjung Surat and Kg. Nyior. The island is a remote area far from the town, making it a perfect gateway from hustle and bustle of the city centre. The mangrove forest of Pulau Tanjung Surat is one of the best forests along Sungai Johor that is home to many species of flora and fauna, evergreen dense mangrove species and pollutant-free healthy ecosystem.
The island played an important role during the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar Ibni Temenggung Ibrahim (1886 – 1895). It was an administrative centre for the Sultan representative Wan Nong Yahya bin Wan Abu Talib the Resident of Tanjung Surat, covering East Johor including the district of Kota Tinggi to Sedili. The Resident was responsible for managing, administering, collecting tax from revenues and crops from Chinese Kangchu along Sungai Johor and the east coast of Johor. He was then replaced by his son Dato Wan Jaafar Wan Nong Yahya which carried the titled Dato’ Penggawa Timur.
The rapid growth of Pulau Tanjung Surat as a centre for the collection and export of black pepper, gambier and forest products such as gutta percha, resin, rattan and others was evidenced with the construction of the jetty in the southern part of the island. All the produce was then brought from this jetty to Singapore.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with KEJORA has identified the potential of the island especially for eco-tourism and edu-tourism. Several SULAM projects had been carried out by more than 300 students from various courses and different disciplines. It was all started when a couple of co-curricula SULAM projects were carried out in this small island. Several visits were then made to the whole island to explore the possibilities of collaborating with the community on SULAM projects for several undergraduate courses.
The highlight of the SULAM activities was when all projects were focused and dedicated for the development of several galleries around the island namely Heritage Gallery, Dato’ Penggawa Timur Gallery, Mangrove Gallery, Fishermen Gallery, Jong Gallery and STEM Education Gallery. There was also a project for the design of welcoming signage at the main jetty of the island to welcome visitors and tourists to the island.
This gallery displays the treasured heritage of Pulau Tanjung Surat as tourism attraction as well as history and heritage reference. Through the establishment of Heritage Gallery, it can improve the tourism sector of Pulau Tanjung Surat by ensuring the sustainable development of historical heritage and culture gallery continue to be carried out by utilizing the traditional historical heritage and culture obtained from Kampung Tanjung Surat, Kampung Nyior and Kampung Linting. This gallery can cultivate awareness among the local community on the importance of protecting and preserving Pulau Tanjung Surat ecosystem as treasured gold and it needs to be inherited and protected for the future.
Dato’ Penggawa Timur Gallery
Dato’ Penggawa Timur Building is a very valuable heritage and history artifact in Pulau Tanjung Surat. This building was built at the end of 1890s and it is one of the most important landmarks in the history of Pulau Tanjung Surat in Johor. The early process of this project is to document some facts and information and collect data on the background history of the building.
This gallery introduced the uniqueness of the fishermen’s life at the floating house in Pulau Tg. Surat and it can be an attraction to tourists who wanted to know more about it. It was built as a reference center for tourists to know more about the life of fishermen at Pulau Tg. Surat. This gallery could be rented out as homestay for those who want to spend the night on the island.
‘Perahu Jong’ is a Malay traditional game, specifically at the coast of Johor-Riau archipelago. This game has existed for hundreds of years during the era of Johor Pahang Riau Lingga sultanate. The miniature-sized sailboat can move in speed with wind which makes it unique and popular, and it is still played by the Malay community in Riau Archipelago and Johor. The activity that is almost extinct is still ongoing in Pulau Tanjung Surat by the local elderly, and now the youngsters are joining in. The Jong team from this island has made Malaysia proud by winning the Jong Racing Competition such as the Regatta Festival in Singapore and Batam. Jong heritage is a very valuable heritage that need to be preserved and highlighted to the tourists. Hence, the development of Jong Heritage Gallery is very important to provide exposure to the public about Jong heritage which include its history, the making as well as how to assemble them
STEM Education Gallery
Pulau Tg. Surat is filled with treasure and heritage that are suitable as an education tourism destination (edu-tourism). The nature and various cultural heritage that are still intact can be used as learning sources for the tourists. The existence of a school on the island can be utilized to provide an added value, not only for tourists but also to the locals. Among the elements that are introduced to this gallery is the early history of education at Pulau Tg.Surat, specifically and the history of education in Malaysia in general. To attract the students’ interest in Science and Mathematics, STEM exhibition is also introduced. This gallery will not only attract tourists, but it will also provide opportunity for students and teachers to conduct the teaching and learning session more easily and exciting, especially in Science and Mathematics.
