HISTORY OF PULAU TANJUNG SURAT
Pulau Tanjung Surat is a small island located at the river mouth of Sungai Johor. The island is a home to about 300 people of 112 families from three different villages: Kg. Linting, Kg. Tanjung Surat and Kg. Nyior. The island is a remote area far from the town, making it a perfect gateway from hustle and bustle of the city centre. The mangrove forest of Pulau Tanjung Surat is one of the best forests along Sungai Johor that is home to many species of flora and fauna, evergreen dense mangrove species and pollutant-free healthy ecosystem.
The island played an important role during the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar Ibni Temenggung Ibrahim (1886 – 1895). It was an administrative centre for the Sultan representative Wan Nong Yahya bin Wan Abu Talib the Resident of Tanjung Surat, covering East Johor including the district of Kota Tinggi to Sedili. The Resident was responsible for managing, administering, collecting tax from revenues and crops from Chinese Kangchu along Sungai Johor and the east coast of Johor. He was then replaced by his son Dato Wan Jaafar Wan Nong Yahya which carried the titled Dato’ Penggawa Timur.
The rapid growth of Pulau Tanjung Surat as a centre for the collection and export of black pepper, gambier and forest products such as gutta percha, resin, rattan and others was evidenced with the construction of the jetty in the southern part of the island. All the produce was then brought from this jetty to Singapore.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with KEJORA has identified the potential of the island especially for eco-tourism and edu-tourism. Several SULAM projects had been carried out by more than 300 students from various courses and different disciplines. It was all started when a couple of co-curricula SULAM projects were carried out in this small island. Several visits were then made to the whole island to explore the possibilities of collaborating with the community on SULAM projects for several undergraduate courses.
The highlight of the SULAM activities was when all projects were focused and dedicated for the development of several galleries around the island namely Heritage Gallery, Dato’ Penggawa Timur Gallery, Mangrove Gallery, Fishermen Gallery, Jong Gallery and STEM Education Gallery. There was also a project for the design of welcoming signage at the main jetty of the island to welcome visitors and tourists to the island.
