Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamaruddin is a specialist in process design of chemical plants. This means, he is an expert on how to organize the production of chemical compounds, so the output can have the optimal balance between output, environmental requirements and economy.

photo of Dr KamaruddinDr. Kamaruddin works with theoretical problems and develop computer-aided models for chemical process design. He has published more than 170 publications in terms of journals, books, book chapters and conference proceedings on process design and control, energy efficient distillation column and engineering education.

Dr. Kamaruddin obtained his PhD at the one of the most prestigious institutions in the world which is Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His PhD experience in Denmark made him more eager to not just become a researcher, but a better lecturer too. Not only supervision was an eye opener during his stay in Denmark. Also, the teaching methods and the general trust in the students was quite new experiences, which Dr. Kamarrudin brought back home.

Dr. Kamaruddin believes that as a lecturer who teach future chemical engineers, he need to instill ethics and values to his students. He believes that chemical engineers need to always consider the environment and have a human touch on whatever they do to prevent environmental damages.  In March 2019, a water pollution incident that occurred caused by illegal chemical waste dumping at the Kim Kim River in Pasir Gudang of Johor in Malaysia. The incident provokes Dr. Kamaruddin Abd. Hamid as a chemical engineering expert and a lecturer to educate the young generation to have a more holistic approach, so disasters as the pollution of the Sungai Kim Kim river can be prevented.

Dr. Kamaruddin’s area of expertise includes energy integrated distillation columns sequence, energy efficient chemical processes: sustainable integrated process design and control, biofuel production. He is also proficient in operating chemical engineering process simulators such as Aspen HYSYS, Aspen
DISTIL and Aspen HX-NET.
