Wahid Omar is currently serving as the 6th Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), a position he held since 2013. A professor of Structural Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering, Wahid obtained his PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Birmingham, his Master’s degree in Bridge Engineering from the University of Surrey, and his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. His areas of expertise include structural assessment, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete and project management. Prior to his present appointment, he was the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Development) (2011-2013) and the Director of the Office of Asset and Development (2008-2011). In his capacity as the then Director of the Office of Asset and Development, he was entrusted with a major task to manage UTM campus development projects worth RM1 billion.
Wahid is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, a Registered Professional Engineer, an Honorary Member of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organization (AFEO) and has offered his expertise to a number of high impact projects, including as one of the core experts for Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) on Financial Sustainability. He is also a board member of various institutions at the national and international levels, which include Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn. Bhd. (METEOR) that operates Open University Malaysia, the Malaysian Examinations Council, and a member of the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP-MC) established by the Ministry of Works. Presently he is chairing the Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net), a network founded by UTM together with a few Asia technological universities. As a Vice-Chancellor, Wahid has actively participated in many international conferences on higher education, and has been invited as speaker or forum’s panelist in many countries such Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, U.K, Turkey and Indonesia.
