Asian Conference on Remote Sensing 37th

Delegates of Geoscience & Digital Earth Centre (INSTeG) headed by Prof Sr Dr Mazlan Hashim have made impact in the recent 37th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing, held in Manila, the Philippines from 20-24 October 2015. This annual gathering of the Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS) not only serve as a annual general meeting for all AARS members but also have been a crowdly-followed conference by all remote sensing and related technologies professionals, scientists, engineers, researchers, policy makers, students , etc. ARRS has regular memberships of all countries in the Asia and Pacific, apart from worldwide sustaining members. INSTeG-UTM is an associate member of AARS. A total of 750 participants have attended this 37th ACRS. Malaysia pledged an intention of hosting ACRS 2018.

INSTeG delegates comprised of Prof Mazlan Hashim, Dr Nadzri Mohd Reba, and Dr Amin Beirvand Pour, also joined by 3 PhD students namely Syarifudin Misbari, Linda Rozaini and Maslina Natar. All have made their oral presentations, lead by sub-plenary presentation of Prof Mazlan Hashim, and technical sessions by others and also poster sessions.

Asia Petroleum Geoscience Conference & Exhibition 2015

Asia Petroleum Geoscience Conference & Exhibition 2015

On 12th-13th October 2015, Asia Petroleum Geoscience Conference & Exhibition (APGCE) was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia. It is Asia’s premier geoscience event with over three decades of history since its inception. Themed “Energising Asia Through Geoscience Ideas & Solutions”, APGCE 2015 offers spectacular journey through Asia’s possibilities, from the rich details of the outcrop landscapes to the immense knowledge-enriching and network building platforms that will leave participants giddy with excitement.

A special Student Programme has been organised in reaching out to the future generation of petroleum geoscientist. The student activities consist of short seminar, oral and poster presentations from the oil-and-gas industry and related field such as remote sensing. The exciting GeoQuiz had involves students from many public and pivate universities in Malaysia, including 6 post graduate students from INSTeG, UTM which compete with other 21 teams. In this biannual event, a PhD student from INSTeG, Syarifuddin Misbari was selected by the conference committee as one of the receiver of Student Excellence Award 2015, together with other excellent student from other university. He received an award certificate and a set of smartphone from the organizer.

Workshop on “Total Solution For Acquiring Underground Utilities’ As-Built Information For Today & Future Development”

Institute of Geospatial Science & Technology (INSTeG), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has recently organized a 2-day national workshop on underground utilities mapping namely “Workshop on Total Solution for Acquiring Underground Utilities’ As-Built Information for Today & Future Development” on 26th and 27th March 2014 at KSL Hotel & Resort and Faculty of Geoinformation & Real Estate (FGHT) respectively. This 2nd series workshop jointly organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM), RDG Supply Sdn. Bhd., Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) and Local Government Department (JKT) was held with a great success as it warmly received about 60 participants from various utility mapping related industry, government agencies, statutory bodies, state authorities and organizations. The dean of UTM Sustainability Research Alliance, Prof. Dr. Rahmalan Aziz, orchestrated the opening of workshop by delivering his inaugural speech on the first day. Prof Dr Rahmalan Aziz made the opportunity to draw his appreciation and congratulations to the organizers and to participants whose initiative would inculcate the national awareness and adequate practice towards sustainable ground utilities framework and mission.

The workshop chairman, Prof. Sr Dr. Mazlan Hashim (on the right) presenting the token of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Rahmalan Ahamad (middle), Dean of UTM Sustainability Research Alliance after officially opening the workshop witnessed by Mr. Mohd Rashid Bin Abd Rahup (on the left), Human Resource Assistant Registrar from FGHT UTM

Basically this workshop anticipated in sharing the knowledge of some practical issues on non-destructive imaging for underground utility mapping from the point of view of the industrial experts as well as the scientific research particularly by the INSTeG.  The objectives of this workshop are; (i) to provide the state-of-the-art knowledge of underground utility mapping; (ii) to provide a hands-on training using adequate approaches and technologies in acquiring as-built information of the buried utilities; and (iii) to promote awareness on the importance of using appropriate skills and safety operation guidelines in acquiring as-built information of the buried utilities. The organizers would like to express great gratitude to all participants and we envisaged that this workshop has drawn positive awareness to stakeholders, data custodian, operational personnel and data users on the importance of appropriate practice and safe operation procedures in underground utilities mapping.
