Datuk Dr Syed Ali Tawfik Al-Attas was the third Director-General of Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM). He earned his PhD from the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC). He has published several academic works, namely: A Guide to Philosophy: The Hidayat al-Hikmah of Al-Abhari (2009) and The Masha’i Philosophical System: A Commentary & Analysis of Hidayat al-Hikmah (2010), written many articles and delivered lectures on a wide range of subjects at various venues both locally and internationally. In addition, he has been appointed as a member to a number of local advisory boards. He is the first son of Tan Sri Professor Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas.
