UTM wins three medals at BioMalaysia 2010

A group of UTM researchers managed to win three medals for the BioInno Awards at the BioMalaysia 2010 held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Nov 3rd, 2010. Headed by Prof. Ramlan Aziz of CEPP, a team consisting of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azila Aziz and Syalwati Asnawi won a gold medal while another team from CLEAR consisting of Assoc. Dr. Norasikin, Norlisa Hj. Mili and Siti Nazrah Zailani won a silver medal and a bronze medal was won by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ing Eko Supriyanti from PH2D-RG. All of these teams are from the Biotech Research Alliance group. The BioMalaysia Conference is Malaysia’s largest international biotechnology conference held annually in Kuala Lumpur. The Conference featured keynote, plenary and parallel sessions from world renowned biotechnology scientists, key policy makers, and captains of the biotechnology industries covering the latest biotechnology trends, policy issues, technological innovations, and commercialisation opportunities. In the past, BioMalaysia Conference has attracted over 1,200 delegates with an expected increase in participation this year, making BioMalaysia the meeting point of choice for this industry.
 
Visit by UTP to strengthen bilateral ties with UTM

UTM will enhance its collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) as it views UTP as a future strategic partner. “UTP has the potential to expand and become a renowned university as it has the potentialand forsight to grow and develop into a global university in the near future,” said UTM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Ir. Dr. Azraai Kasim during a meeting with delegates from UTP on 28th October 2010. “UTM will assist in any way we can to ensure UTP’s aspiration will be a reality , and in return, UTM would also benefit from the aspiration in many ways,” Azrai added. The delegation comprising of UTP’s senior officers was headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Rashid Abd Aziz, Director, Research Enterprise Office. The one-day visit to UTM Johor Bahru Campus is initial step collaboration between UTM and UTP before both parties sign a Memorandum of Understanding scheduled in Kuala Lumpur in the near future. “We want to learn from UTM as UTP aspires to become the 6th Research University in Malaysia. We are impressed that UTM was given the RU status in such a short period of time,” said Rashid during the meeting. The MoU will seal the agreement between UTM and UTP to forge collaboration in several fields of interest that would benefit both universities.
