Community Service:  Program Khidmat Komuniti Pendidikan Celik Riadah Air (CERIA) by Geoscience and Digital Earth Science (INSTeG), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

October 24, 2023 – Geoscience and Digital Earth Science (INSTeG), Research Institute for Sustainability and Environment (RISE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, organized the Community Service Program for Water-Savvy Educational Recreation (CERIA) at the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU). The program was led by Dr. Mohd Rizaludin bin Mahmud, a researcher at INSTeG, with INSTeG staff Puan Nurul Nadiah binti Yahya and Encik Mohd Taufik bin Razali, along with students under the Bachelor of Science in Geoinformatics program as facilitators. The program was attended by 25 fourth-year students from SMK Dato’ Yunos Sulaiman, Pontian, Johor, and was inaugurated by the Director of INSTeG, Associate Professor Ts. Gs. Dr. Mohd Nadzri Md Reba.

One of INSTeG’s current focuses is towards community education for targeted groups. The CERIA program aims to provide education to the primary target group, which is school teenagers exposed to disaster risks in water recreation areas, including waterfalls, rivers, and beaches. In this program, school teenagers were given specially designed modules for safe water recreation education, covering knowledge about disaster risk phenomena in water recreation areas, safety measures, and the latest technologies involved in monitoring, observation, and prediction.

Participants were also taken to visit several places around the campus accompanied by facilitators. Among the places visited were the Chancellor’s building, Sultanah Zanariah Library, and the FABU gallery. At the end of the program, students gained knowledge about geospatial technology involved in detecting, monitoring, and predicting extreme phenomena. INSTeG also hopes that community service education programs like this can be conducted in the future.”
