KUALA TERENGGANU, Tuesday, 10th October 2017 – International Conference and Exposition on Inventions by Institutions of Higher Learning (PECIPTA) is a biannual programme organised by Malaysia Ministry of Education together with selected university since 2001. The aim of this event is for local and international researchers from higher education institution to showcase their product innovations. PECIPTA is also a collaboration platform for participants to form collaboration with private entities to assist in the development of prototype and commercialization. This year’s PECIPTA (2017) was held at the Gong Badak Indoor Stadium in Kuala Terengganu co-organized by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) with the theme “Nurturing Entrepreneurs through Social Innovation and Education”.
This year, Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD) a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICOE) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia has participated in PECIPTA 2017 with two products innovation namely OPPA: Ecofriendly Natural Wood Preservative and Plant Growth Enhancer and High Protein Fish Pasta led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zainul Akmar Zakaria and Dr. Rosnani Hasham, respectively.

OPPA: Ecofriendly Natural Wood Preservative and Plant Growth Enhancer

Puan Maizatulakmal Yahayu (Research Officer) and Fakhrul Syukri Abd. Aziz (Graduate Researcher)
OPPA centers on the pyroligneous acid (PA) which is produced from pyrolysis of locally available lignocellulosic biomass at optimum conditions (highest Total Phenolic Content). Optimized PA (OPPA) mainly consists of polyphenolic compounds and organic acids which is known to have antioxidants, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and wood preservative properties. This invention was introduced due to our concern on the current conventional agricultural waste biomass management where most were burned up or left untapped in the plantation area. This has contributed to severe environmental pollution. The applications of OPPA as a wood preservative and plant growth enhancer has been evaluated together with local collaborators and funded by private and government agencies. With this, OPPA can be an alternative wood preservative and plant growth enhancer agents to replace current conventional practice which is more toxic to both human and environment. Two project members, Puan Maizatulakmal Yahayu (Research Officer) and Fakhrul Syukri Abd. Aziz (Graduate Researcher) represented this invention with a succesful aknowledgement of the Silver Award.
High Protein Fish Pasta

Dr. Rosnani Hasham (Project Leader), Puan Zaitul Iffa Abd. Rasid (Research Officer), Cik Farahdiana Ariffin (Research Officer) and Puan Azizah Ishak (Lab Assistant)

The fish pasta which is a community project with Mersing district under the Institut Inovasi Strategik Johor (IISJ) grant scheme. This pasta product was inspired by the “keropok lekor” of Mersing, which led to the innovation of a noodle-type product. The pasta is formulated with the combination of durum wheat and selected fresh fish fillet obtained from local fishermen in Mersing. Incorporation of 50% fish fillet in this pasta product is an alternative to increase nutritive value especially the protein content and enhance the taste and flavour of the pasta compared to common pasta in the market. The uniqueness of fish pasta includes: content low glycemic index, high vitamin and minerals and provide high satiety index. This product is in line with IBD goals to produce wellness products for consumers, and is positioned in the premium sector and is expected to be commercialized in the market. This invention was presented by Dr. Rosnani Hasham (Project Leader), Puan Zaitul Iffa Abd. Rasid (Research Officer), Cik Farahdiana Ariffin (Research Officer) and Puan Azizah Ishak (Lab Assistant) and has achieved a Bronze Medal in PECIPTA 2017.
