MARCH:

 

 

1) Petro Academia: Competition 101

 

Petro Academia: Competition 101 is a talk exposure event which was conducted through an online platform (Cisco WebEx) on 10th March 2021. This Talk event garnered a whopping number of 100 delegates mostly from the School of Chemical Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering and other faculties as well all together in one roof. 

 

For this interesting and exciting event our committee has invited four experienced speakers to give a talk and a short briefing regarding their experiences and tips to do well in the respective competition. This was aimed to boost our members’ knowledge in every competition that going to conduct in upcoming weeks.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

2) SPE-UTM SC Resume Talk

 

 

SPE-UTM SC Resume Talk was organized virtually on 16th March 2021 aimed to introduce the best way to write the CV in order for the students to become an outstanding candidate among others. The event was participated by 152 students, mostly were Petroleum Engineering students.

 

Overall, the talk can be divided into two different sessions, the first session was focusing on personal branding on building a good resume while the second one was on technical skills in writing a great resume. The event started with the speaker asked the audiences to describe themselves by their strength. This is to engage the audiences to further acknowledgement about themselves simultaneously about what to put in the resume. Throughout this session, the aim was to escalate audiences’ passion in personal branding through LinkedIn to demonstrate excellent resume background. On the second half, there were the tips and tricks, and dos and don’ts for a resume. The speaker also shared examples of resume and how to keep it up-to-date to job seeking trend. Since many things are carried out virtually right now, there were also some tips on how to ace virtual interview to appeal to future employer more and how to reach them.

 

From this event, the students able to learn and practice to write the perfect CV which would be really useful when applying for jobs as well as during the interview. This event served the students a supply pack for them to be well prepared before applying for job since it is the first impression by the recruiter. It has been an amazing opportunity and exposure for the students who will be graduating soon!

 

 

 

3) Benchmarking with SPE PEM Akamigas

 

On 20th March 2021, SPE PEM Akamigas SC had collaborated with SPE Universiti Teknologi Malaysia SC on “External Benchmarking Vol. 2” using Zoom online meeting platform.

 

In this event, both SPE’s officers were able to exchange their culture and ideas on how to run the organization. Officers were also expanded their network across the border even without meeting in real life. Typically, everyone learned from each others’ strength and weakness with solutions from different perspective.

 

A ‘Kahoot’ session has been held to enhance the relationship between the officers with some ‘strange’ questions!

 

We hope to have another benchmarking event with SPE PEM Akamigas again!

 

 

 

4) SPE-UTM SC EARTH WEEK

 

20 MARCH 2021 – 27 MARCH 2021
Google Meet

 

The first Earth Week organized virtually by SPE-UTM SC was a success. This week aimed to instill the social responsibility towards environment among the students and to guide the students towards positivity that might contribute to society.

 

Warmest gratitude to Mr. Hazman Ikhwan Mohamad Sabri, HSE Manager of Pangkalan Bekalan Kemaman Sdn Bhd for being the speaker in the first webinar called Earth Week Webinar on 24 March, sharing significant knowledge regarding renewable energy that enlighten our thoughts.

 

Most appreciated also to Miss Atilia Bashardin, Geoscience Officer at Jabatan Mineral & Geosains Malaysia for time and effort to share your expertise with us in our second webinar on 26 March, called Climate Change with Geological Perspective Webinar.

5) Global Sharing Session: Indonesia Edition

 

The first edition of Global Sharing Session is initiated with representatives from reputable oil and gas companies in Indonesia as speakers. With the theme “The First Step”, we invited 2 speakers from PERTAMINA and Schlumberger to talk about what should students prepare to face the working world. They also describe the job description and challenges faced as a junior field engineer and process engineer.

APRIL:

 

1) SPE-UTM SC CAREER WORKSHOP 2021

 

This career workshop brought you two topics which are “ Your Network is Your Net Worth” and “ Power Plan for Online Interview Success “. The topics were presented by our guests of honor that night, Ms Ayu Shahirah Salem who is a software engineer at bp and Mr Patrick Tan Peng Jun who is the founder for DR Resume Services.

 

This career workshop is aimed to encourage the participants to build a strong networking as life and work are all about relationships. Working in collaboration with others who have a good understanding will provide a stronger foundation, enabling us to reach a higher level of success than we would on our own. As the pandemic of COVID-19 is not over yet, many things have changed and all of us should adapt to the new norm.

 

Therefore, this career workshop will support the students to be well prepared with essential skills that the recruiters would look for in their candidates.

 

 

 

2) Resume Talk 2.0

 

On 8th April 2021, SPE-UTM SC has conducted a second virtual Resume Talk which is Resume Talk 2.0 through online platform (Cisco Webex Meetings). This event gathered a number of 85 participants mostly from Faculty of Engineering and other universities’ students.

 

We had invited Mr Han Jim Chua, a Talent Acquisition Manager from Schlumberger to share his advice and experience regarding job applications. Throughout this event, participants have learned to recognize three main points (Contribute – Impact – Quantify) in order to write a significant resume.

 

Warmest gratitude to Mr Han Jim Chua for his insightful sharing and hopefully, this event can motivate and expand students’ potential in perfecting their resumes to land their dream jobs.

 

 

3) Industry Forum

 

On 10th of April 2021, SPE-UTM SC has conducted a virtual Industry Forum via online platform, Cisco Webex Meeting. The event had around 134 participants, with majority from Engineering courses.

 

The list of invited speakers includes three speakers. First was Miss. Lim Chia Wei, a Technical Sales Engineer at Schlumberger. The second speaker was Mr. Derek, a Completion Field Engineer at Schlumberger. And finally, Mr. Camilo, project coordinator at UNAL with topics related to EOR, Stimulation, Fracturing & application of Nanotechnology in the industry.

 

All the speakers highlighted their career path journey in the first session of the event, and then it was followed by a forum session, which has brought up some of the commonly asked questions in the Oil & Gas industry as well as those questions related to graduating students.

 


 

4) Charity Month 2021

 

On 6 May 2021, collected donations were sent to our beneficiaries, Pusat Jagaan Warga Emas Nur Ehsan and Rumah Barkat Johor. We have finally completed one of the biggest events of SPE-UTM SC last month.

 

Throughout the event, our team had organized various activities to collect donations from the public such as virtual half-marathon, Ig photo contest, Tetris fundraising and charity e-sports. We received plentiful support in this charity events. The purpose of this event is to raise social awareness towards the unfortunate ones. This activity also helps our youth to be grateful on what they have since there are needy individuals who are living less fortunate situations out there who need help from the society.

 

This help can alleviate their burden to accommodate their daily life in more comfortable ways which able to eradicate the poor in our country from time to time.

 

 

 

 

MAY:

1) SPE-UTM SC INTELLECTUAL DAY 2021

On 21st and 22nd of May 2021, SPE-UTM SC has conducted a virtual event via Zoom Meeting and Google Meet. The program has separated into 3 main parts which are Competitions, Software Workshop and Industrial Forum.

The type of competitions being conducted are Oil Rig Design Competition, Petrobrain Competition and T-Navigator Competition while the software workshop was regarding T-Navigator Training Workshop. Lastly, the industry forum was discussing about the industry outlook during COVID-19 by several professionals from industry and lead by a lecturer from university.

 

2) SPE-UTM SC INDUSTRIAL ACADEMIA I

SPE-UTM SC INDUSTRIAL ACADEMIA 1 2021 was held virtually on 7th May 2021 from 9 am to 11.45 am at which Cisco Webex was chosen as our platform where participants could join the event from their own places. For the Cisco Webex, Dr Safwan Abd Aziz, a lecturer from Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) personal room was used as he has the premium account.
 
This event was aimed to expose students to real-life situation that will prepare students for their future. It might help students to know more about the companies and the opportunities of working with different companies. Baker Hughes, a seasoned expert in the oil and gas industry, collaborated on this event. Baker Hughes develops and deploys cutting-edge technology for energy and industrial organisations seeking more efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions. 

The primary focus of this programme was on the principles of offshore work scope. The focused subject allowed students to obtain a better understanding of drilling, well completion, and the structure of an oil rig.


3) SPE-UTM SC INDUSTRIAL ACADEMIA II

SPE-UTM SC held a virtual Industrial Academia 2 using Microsoft Teams on the 28th of May 2021. Around 116 engineers from diverse engineering degrees, including petroleum, chemical, and electrical, attended the event. 


4) SPE-UTM SC COMPANY DAY 1

On 8th of May 2021, SPE-UTM SC has conducted a virtual event via online platform, Cisco WebEx Meeting. The program has 2 main parts, which are Technical Talk and Career Talk.

The speaker for the event is Mr Lingies Santhirasekaran, a reservoir engineer at ExxonMobil. Mr Lingies was also the Vice President for SPE UCSI University which won the Outstanding / Gold Standard Student Chapter award during his term.

His background made him the perfect speaker for this event. Not only that, but we are also very honored to have the deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr Shamsul Bin Sahibuddin to officiate our program before the program starts.

The program started off by introduction of ExxonMobil’s history, and current performance of the company in Malaysia. Next, the program proceeds to a Technical Talk session which covers Intelligent Well Completion.

Afterwards, the Mr Lingies gave some advice on job hunting skills and CV tips during Career Talk session. Lastly, after the Q&A session, we also had a Kahoot! session to make the program more interesting.


5) MICROSOFT EXCEL WORKSHOP

On the 28th of May 2021, SPE-UTM SC has organized Microsoft Excel Workshop 2021 which is held virtually through Cisco Webex meeting. This workshop was conducted almost 2 hours and 30 minutes. A total of 129 participants had joined in this event.

Most of the attendees were UTM students and there were also students from other universities such as UKM, UTP, UITM, Quest International University and so on. Besides engineering students, participants from various courses such as medical, business management, law and actuarial science had spent their time by joining in this event. There were also few graduates that attended in this workshop.

The guest speaker who conducted this workshop was Mr.Elengeswaran C. Ehambaranathan and he is currently employed as a Planning and Capital Allocation Executive in Tenaga Nasional Berhad. 

The main scope of this event is to learn the basic skills and shortcuts to create proper spreadsheets and analysis by using Microsoft Excel. In this case, participants would be able to understand the pattern in using simple arithmetic calculation to complex data analysis.
