On 29 March 2013, a number of 30 students from SPE-UTM SC went to visit Halliburton in G-Tower, Kuala Lumpur. In this visit, some of the objectives has been achieved, which are the discovery of latest technology, new product or services, Sperry drilling of Halliburton, expectation from fresh graduate, company culture and salary package.

Firstly, we are brief about safety given by Suresh. Using smartphone, the location will be saved in the captured picture. This is very dangerous as the location is stored and everyone can see where you are through Net, especially for hacker. Therefore, we should close the GPS or Satellite settings in our phone when capturing picture.

Secondly, the Vice President of Halliburton gives us the general introduction about Halliburton. For our information, Halliburton do not spend or pay effort in marketing, promoting or advertising. However, Halliburton ranked No.2 among the companies. The ranking is based on the patent strength in technology and not popularity. Recently, a manufacturing plant has been started in Senai. On the other hand, the largest completion manufacturing of Halliburton in Asia Pacific is just implemented in Singapore last week. The choice of location in Singapore is based on the high manufacturing efficiency in Singapore globally. In Oil & Gas industry, mistake is not allowed. For instance, one can’t take shortcut in their work. Late or absence in meeting also cannot be excused.

Next is the talk about career in Halliburton by Loke Kwan from HR Recruitment Department. Halliburton has 94 years of history as an energy services company globally. The services provided include both drilling & evaluation and completion & production. In this industry, safety is always the top priority.

In the afternoon, we are given a technical talk on completion tools by Navindran J who is also an ex-UTM student in Mechanical engineering. Introduction of mechanical double grip packer, hydraulic set packer, seal bore packer and hydraulic set dual packer are given by him. As an employee of Halliburton, we need to practice
i. Aptitude- skill, ability, talent
ii. Attitude- personality
iii. Altitude- growth

Other introductions are the drilling tool and dual completion. Furthermore, the tool in completion- Surface Control Tubing-Retrievable Safety Valve also being explained. In his experience, offshore life is always challenging and the working environment is dirty.

Apart from that, a talk on hydraulic fracturing is given by Halliburton. Hydrocarbon Bearing Zones are not aquifers because production is not related to aquifers except by the sealed wellbore. Besides, the fracturing process also briefly explained. The material used to make the fluid thick (viscous) is usually a natural polymer derived from guar beans. Fresh water in fracturing is expensive and difficult to obtain for the operator. Hence, a new fluid system is developed that mixed using produced water from the field.

In the nutshell, we have gained lots of both general and technical knowledge from Halliburton through the visit. In the comments from Halliburton, UTM student is not enough proactive and lack of communication skills. Hence, we should pay more effort and improvement in this context. However, we still have a strong knowledgebase compared to the others.
